Bio & Rationale
Sevens is a Brisbane-based painter whose work spans large-scale murals and studio canvases. His practice is rooted in acrylics, often layered with charcoal and oil pastels for grit and texture. He thrives on scale – the impact of towering murals matched with the intimacy of studio works that reward close attention. Both carry his signature mix of self-expression, nostalgia, and reflection on the everyday.
His murals have become part of Brisbane’s streetscape, pulsing with openness and connection, while his studio pieces often explore memory and resilience. Sevens paints as a way of charting growth – not the clean, linear kind, but the messy, stop-start version most people actually live through. That honesty gives his art its edge, and makes it resonate with viewers who recognise the same struggle in themselves.
For Aether’s South African NEIPA, we selected Sevens’ piece The Journey of Growth. The work shows a fractured vase and broken flowers, symbols of the turbulence and disorder that come before change. Rising above them, sunflowers blaze in full bloom – radiant, unapologetic, alive. They represent the success and clarity that follow struggle, a reminder that growth is rarely easy, but always worthwhile.
The artwork’s energy pairs naturally with the beer: South African hops bringing tropical chaos up front, then resolving into brightness and balance. Both the painting and the brew tell the same story – from ruin to radiance.
