Theo Papathomas

Victoria, Australia

Bio & Rationale

Theo Papathomas is a full-time Melbourne-based artist known for his vibrant, intuitive landscapes. From an early age he found comfort in painting as a form of visual communication, and today his practice spans abstraction, figuration, and mixed media experiments. What unites it all is his focus on the spirit of the Australian landscape – its rhythms, unpredictability, and energy.

Theo has exhibited widely across Australia and internationally, with his work appearing on television shows such as The Block and House Rules. His canvases are often described as immersive: layers of colour and movement that carry emotional resonance as much as visual appeal. He’s been recognised by peers and institutions alike, including shortlisting in major prizes like the Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW, the Len Fox, and the Paddington Art Prize.

For Aether, Theo’s artwork was paired with our Sparkling Sour. The beer’s effervescence, tang, and playful bite echoed the bright palettes and kinetic brushstrokes of his work. His paintings don’t aim to present landscapes literally – instead, they capture their spirit, transporting viewers into the pulse of the land. That made for a perfect fit with a beer designed to be lively, spirited, and full of energy.
