Jason Perry

‘What do you think of while in pure silence? On most days the mind tends to wander and often gets filled with momentary moods or moments of reactions from throughout the day. Other times one is able to see merely what is in front, completely unaffected by atmosphere or moods… Pure uninterrupted silence and serenity. Shot at Lake Toolondo, Victoria, Jason went off road and shot all night to get this amazing photograph titled ‘The Silence’. With the Milky Way only an hour from setting completely below the horizon he decided to capture it at its lowest point, using a 50mm prime lens he fired off 13 shots from left to right to create the sprawling panorama’.

Jason developed a love of photography after serving 27 years in the Marine Corps. He was specifically drawn to astrophotography, specialising in wide-field astrophotography, landscape and time-lapse photography/ videography. Jason is the founder of non-profit veteran focus which provides a creative experience for veterans to connect and develop community through astrophotography workshops, camaraderie and art therapy. He has a Bachelor of Arts in Photography from Photography Studies College and is a self-taught astrophotographer/digital retoucher. His work has been exhibited in the Royal Museums Greenwich UK, the South Australian Museum, and the Australian Museum in Sydney. He is also the 2022 winner of the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year, Astrophotography Category.
