Theo Papathomas

Theo Papathomas is a full-time artist based in Melbourne, Australia. From a young age, Theo was artistically gifted, but it was during his secondary education where his talents were fostered by his teachers. Painting is a form of visual communication for Theo, and he is more comfortable communicating this way, rather than verbally. As an experimental artist, Theo uses different mediums and various styles – always challenging his practice. Over the years, Theo has become more confident in his own abstract style, encouraged by artwork sales; solo and group exhibitions both nationally and internationally; and features on TV shows such as The Block and House Rules. Most encouraging to Theo though, has been recognition from his peers – being a finalist and award winner in numerous prestigious such as Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW, Len Fox and Paddington Art Prize.

Theo’s inspiration comes from being part of the Australian landscape, witnessing and experiencing the energy of its dramatic seasonal change. The richness and unpredictable command of intuitive painting capture Theo’s memories of the landscape’s mesmerising rhythms. The Australian Landscape has an immense spirituality, which Theo aims to evoke in his constructed landscapes of images derived from life. The images and symbols which are represented in Theo’s work completely spontaneous and intuitive without using any drawings as a guide. Theo tries to charge his paintings full of emotion and spirituality, and transport the viewer into a new experience. Theo’s vibrant palette aims to capture the spirit of this land, often associated with the great Australian outback.
